INDIANAPOLIS – During the winter months, Indy Parks continues to host a line-up of events to provide enriching experiences for Indianapolis residents. From snowy outdoor hikes and practicing your hockey skills, to indoor fitness classes and art classes for all ages, there is something for all residents to enjoy this winter. Information about special events and a sample of winter programs are listed below. Residents can learn more about upcoming programs at parks.indy.gov/programs
Fitness Classes
- Boxing at Riverside Park, Jan. 8 – April 9: This free class, instructed by former World Heavyweight Champion Lamon Brewster, is meant to help women develop empowerment and self-control, a positive attitude, self-defense skills, strength, sharper focus, and increased fitness and flexibility.
- Tina’s Water Aerobics at Thatcher Park, Jan. 7 – May 29: This water aerobics class is a high-energy class geared toward those who want a full body workout.
- Stick and Puck Hockey and Steel Sled Hockey at Perry Park, Jan. 1 – April 17: During the winter months, Perry Park offers chances for players of all abilities to practice their hockey skills.
Outdoor Winter Adventures
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day Self-Guided Hike at Eagle Creek Park, Jan. 12 – Jan. 26: Martin Luther King Day is observed on the third Monday of January. Test your knowledge with our self-guided MLK Hike! Pick up a quiz at the Earth Discovery Center and head out for an easy ½ mile hike to see if you can discover the answers.
- Hike with a Naturalist at Holliday Park, Jan. 18 – May 17: Take a hike through Holliday Park with a staff naturalist. You never know what you’ll find, but you’ll always find beauty and hopefully learn something new about your local environment!
- Nature Nuts at Christian Park, Jan. 7 – Feb. 11: This program is designed to help toddlers explore the world of nature right here in Christian Park. Your little ones will get the opportunity to go on nature walks, get creative while doing nature themed crafts, enjoy group games such as barnyard tag and much more!
Arts and Crafts
- 8-week intro to oil painting, Garfield Park Arts Center, Jan. 30 – March 20: Join us for an 8-week introduction to oil painting, taught by local artist Anna Corso. For young artists ages 13 – 19.
- Crochet and sewing classes at Broad Ripple Park, various weeknights: Broad Ripple Park offers several beginner classes for both teens and adults in both sewing and crochet.
- Monthly Poetry Recitals at Rhodius Park, February – May: Poetry Recital gives each person an opportunity to practice their writing and public speaking, while having fun. It’s a great place to build confidence in a warm, supportive environment.
