The Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden are located in Garfield Park on the city’s near southside. The area was designed by city planner and landscape architect George Kessler and built in 1916.
In 1954, the current aluminum framed Conservatory was built, the first structure of its kind in the country. Today, the 10,000 square-foot Conservatory houses tropical plants and waterfalls and hosts several horticultural shows throughout the year.
The Sunken Garden is a 3-acre formal garden with active fountains. The Garden blooms with a tulip display in the spring and thousands of annuals throughout the summer months.
In 2019, the Children’s Garden was refurbished to create Blake’s Garden – an outdoor garden space designed to allow both the young and old to explore the wonders of nature, engage in outdoor play and use their imagination and creativity.
