Investing into our local parks
In February 2021, Mayor Joe Hogsett announced a $45 million investment into Indy Parks facilities through the Circle City Forward initiative. The plan sets aside $20 million for Frederick Douglass Park’s new family center, $11 million for upgrades to Riverside Regional Park, and $7 million each for Grassy Greek Park and Krannert Park. Scroll down to see how that funding is being utilized.
Frederick Douglass Park
The park’s new family center will include fitness areas and locker rooms, a new gym, and plenty of office and program activity space. In spring 2021, project organizers and designers began meeting with the public to create plans for the new facility, and the final design was presented in July 2021. A groundbreaking to celebrate the beginning of construction was held on October 13, 2022. Click here to view photos of the groundbreaking event. View updated renderings of the Family Center here.
Riverside Regional Park
Completed in 2017, the Riverside Regional Park Master Plan identifies several opportunities to add new amenities and update the existing features of the park to better serve neighbors and community members. Those include the creation of a regional aquatic center, athletic fields, an adventure park, and a promenade and the renovation of the Taggart Memorial to become a performance venue. Grassy Creek Regional Park
Plans are in the works now for several improvements at Grassy Creek Regional Park. Using Circle City Forward funding, a new environmental community center will be built at the park, with rooms available to rent by the community. A new entrance to the park will be built on German Church Road, and new trails will enhance connectivity to the larger park. There are also plans to build new picnic areas, a playground, and a boardwalk over the Grassy Creek Wetland. To view the second presentation of Phase 1 of the design plan, click here.
Krannert Park
The design process for the new Krannert Park Family Center has begun! The plan involves renovating the existing family center to make room for new exercise areas, multi-purpose rooms, and locker rooms. The space where the indoor pool now sits will be transformed into a fitness room, complete with a running track. A new indoor pool will be built in a separate aquatic building. The plans also propose building a splash pad, a shelter, and a pickleball court. We held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 17, 2022. To view photos from the groundbreaking, click here.
