Thatcher se desempe\u00f1\u00f3 como superintendente de la divisi\u00f3n de recreaci\u00f3n y el alcalde la nombr\u00f3 directora del departamento de parques de 1956 a 1963. A principios de la d\u00e9cada de 1970, el Centro Comunitario Thatcher existente, ubicado en Grande Avenue y Cossell Road, obstaculizaba las crecientes necesidades de Allison Transmission.
