This park is named after William Watson Woollen, a Hoosier naturalist and environmentalist who practiced law in Indianapolis and briefly served as county attorney. In 1908 Woolen founded \u201cThe Nature Study Club\u2019 of Indianapolis, dedicated to the study of local flora and fauna\u2014particularly native bird populations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woollen donated his estate to the City of Indianapolis in 1909, asking that it be preserved as a bird sanctuary and botanical study area for all to enjoy. Today it remains undeveloped and full of opportunities to experience nature in an otherwise urban environment. Mature sycamore and tulip trees house a variety of hawks, owls, woodpeckers, and more. Gentle hills and ravines, along with its proximity to the Fall Creek trail and waterfront, make this park a perfect retreat to observe and learn from nature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wollen wrote a book about the site in 1907 called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=uc2.ark:\/13960\/t1td9ph21&amp;seq=37\">The Birds of Buzzards Roost<\/a><\/em> which can be read and downloaded for free. The book includes historical photos of the area and detailed accounts of the bird species found in the area from Great Horned Owls and Screech Owls to Kingfishers, Orioles, and Hummingbirds.
