Hill trabaj\u00f3 por primera vez en Indian\u00e1polis como empleado de correos y luego como barbero. Finalmente, asisti\u00f3 a la Facultad de Derecho Central y se gradu\u00f3 en 1882. Como abogado, Hill fue uno de los primeros abogados negros admitidos en el colegio de abogados de Indian\u00e1polis.
