Many parks named after influential people honor those who have made a lasting impact on Indianapolis and its community. Among them are four parks named after famous writers whose work helped shape the city\u2019s cultural identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parque Dan Wakefield&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/es\/parks\/dan-wakefield-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parque Dan Wakefield<\/a><s>,<\/s> was established in 1928 and is located at the intersection of 61st Street and Broadway Street in Broad Ripple.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city originally named it &#8216;Broadway &amp; 61st Street Park&#8217; and renamed it in 2016 to honor Indianapolis native and author Dan Wakefield. While attending Shortridge High School\u2014just a 10-minute drive from the park\u2014Wakefield began his writing journey as a contributor to the school newspaper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4829\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon.webp 1200w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-500x333.webp 500w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-975x650.webp 975w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-18x12.webp 18w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-480x320.webp 480w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/dan-ribbon-420x280.webp 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Best known for his nonfiction and writings on topics including spirituality and the Civil Rights Movement, Wakefield authored more than 48 books over the course of his career. Filmmakers adapted two of his most notable novels, <em>Going All the Way<\/em> y <em>Starting Over<\/em>, into films, with Wakefield writing the screenplay for <em>Going All the Way<\/em>.<br>He also created the story for the television show <em>James at 15<\/em>. Wakefield was widely admired for his generosity and storytelling. He lived by the quote from Philo: \u201cBe kind, for everyone you know is fighting a great battle.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After living and working in several states, Wakefield returned to Indianapolis permanently in 2011. He attended the 2016 dedication of the park named in his honor, an event attended by more than 100 people. Dan Wakefield passed away in 2024 at the age of 91, but his legacy continues to inspire Indianapolis and beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4828\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan.jpg 750w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan-571x320.jpg 571w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/portrait-of-dan-420x235.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parque Mari Evans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/es\/parks\/mari-evans-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parque Mari Evans<\/a> is a quaint neighborhood park located in the Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was named in honor of Mari Evans, an incredible author, activist, and poet, who was widely recognized as one of the founders of the Black Arts Movement. Born in Ohio in 1923, Evans initially pursued careers in fashion design and jazz before turning to writing. She moved to Indianapolis in 1947 and made it her permanent home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans.jpg\" alt=\"Mari Evans giving a speech.\" class=\"wp-image-4816\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans.jpg 504w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans-427x320.jpg 427w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/headshot-of-Mari-evans-420x315.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mari Evans served as a writer-in-residence at Indiana University, where she also taught a number of courses. She was a key figure in the university\u2019s Black Student Union.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passionate activist, Evans spoke out in causes including racial justice, prison reform, gender equality, and opposition to capital punishment. She used her voice to speak up for those who needed it most. Evans\u2019s work often explored themes of racial and gender inequality. Some of her most notable contributions include the television documentary <em>The Black Experience<\/em>, the books <em>J.D.<\/em> y <em>Singing Black<\/em>, and her most well-known poem, <em>I Am a Black Woman<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mari Evans passed away in Indianapolis in 2017. Today, a 30-foot mural on Massachusetts Avenue honors her legacy. His Puritan ancestry and his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts\u2014a town infamous for its witch trials\u2014inspired his writing, which centered on themes of sin, guilt, and moral conflict.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawthorne\u2019s early works, like <em>Twice-Told Tales<\/em>, gained some attention, but you probably know him most from his more popular book, <em>The Scarlet Letter.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1013\" src=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4830\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-500x338.jpg 500w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-975x658.jpg 975w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-1440x972.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-474x320.jpg 474w, https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/black-and-white-photo-420x284.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">parque frederick douglas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.indy.gov\/es\/parks\/frederick-douglass-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parque frederick douglas<\/a> was established in 1921 in the Martindale-Brightwood community on East 25th Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They named the park in honor of Frederick Douglass, the prominent Black abolitionist. His enslaver\u2019s wife taught him to read and write, defying laws that prohibited the education of enslaved people. Douglass continued to learn from white children in the area and eventually escaped slavery in 1838. As a free man, he became a powerful speaker, speaking at abolitionist meetings and giving speeches against slavery. In 1845, at the age of 27, he published his first autobiography<em> Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave<\/em>, which became a bestseller and remains widely read today.<s>.<\/s>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglass also began producing abolitionist newspapers, including <em>The North Star<\/em>, which held the motto: \u201cRight is of no Sex \u2013 Truth is of no Color \u2013 God is the Father of us all, and we are all brethren.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frederick Douglass passed away in 1895.
