INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Mayor Joe Hogsett, Parks Committee Chair Councilor Crista Carlino, and Indy Parks Director Phyllis Boyd highlighted the Indy Parks Summer Servings Program at Frederick Douglass Park and served meals to local youth. Summer Servings is part of the Summer Food Service Program which aims to fill the summer gap when children cannot get the meals they would usually receive from the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs during the school year.
“Thanks to Summer Servings, thousands of children don’t have to worry about missing out on a nutritious meal,” said Mayor Hogsett. “By ensuring our city’s kids are well fed when they don’t have access to school meal programs, Summer Servings helps provide the nutrition they need to grow, to learn, and to thrive.”
“Indy Parks’ dedication goes beyond providing public spaces for gatherings,” said Parks Committee Chair Crista Carlino. “Their commitment to addressing the diverse needs of our community is evident in initiatives like the Summer Servings Program. By offering essential services such as nutritious meals, Indy Parks is helping to create supportive and thriving neighborhoods for all residents.”
The Indy Parks meals program has served over 3 million meals since 2013, including over 190,000 total meals in 2023. Summer Servings meals are provided Monday through Friday at 11 Indy Parks serving locations and five mobile units that serve various park, library, and apartment complex locations.
“The Summer Servings program is a key part of Indy Parks’ essential services that help combat food insecurity in our communities,” added Director Boyd. “Inspiring healthy living is an important part of our Indy Parks mission, not only through access to physical activity but also by providing healthy food. I encourage folks to go to parks.indy.gov or call (317) 327-7275 for information about Summer Servings locations and times near you.”
