About Frank Young Park
Established in 1922, Frank Young Park is located on the near northwest side. The park has playground equipment, horseshoes, picnic tables, and is named after Frank Young, an African—American pastor in Indianapolis and dedicated his life to contributing to his community.
Frank Young Park Celebrates 100 Years
Knowing how much everyone loves birthdays, it was so much fun to recognize Frank Young Park on its 100th Anniversary. On October 15, 2022, in partnership with the newly created Friends of Frank Young Park advisory group, a community celebration was held with park neighbors, elected officials, and city organizations. During the event, participants shared the park’s history and plans to grow services and programs in the future. A new playground is also in the works courtesy of the American Rescue Plan Act funding. Frank Young Park, initially known as Udell Street Park was founded in 1922. The Park was renamed to Rev. Frank F. Young on January 12, 1971.
Frank F. Young was born in Indianapolis in 1873, the last child in a family of six children. Young began his ministry in 1892, serving at both Olivet and Garfield Baptist Churches. In 1907, he began the pastorate of the First Baptist Church in North Indianapolis, where he remained for the next 60 years. During that time, the church relocated twice of as its membership steadily grew. Young lived to be 94 years old. The longevity of his life was enhanced by his love for people both young and old. He served in many leadership capacities and his social concern for and contributions to the betterment of his community and the City of Indianapolis were innumerable.
Committed community members and organizations offer programming for neighborhood residents in Frank Young Park, which, since 1922 has provided recreational opportunities for families to play, gather, relax, and explore the natural landscape in the Northwest Landing community.
