Daypack Essentials

In this class you will learn the 10 essentials recommended for hikers to carry for comfort and safety.

Heading out on a hike? It’s important to bring the right gear. The type of gear you take depends on where you’re going, the time of year, and how far you plan to travel. In this class you will learn the 10 essentials recommended for hikers to carry for comfort and safety. As we unpack these essentials, we’ll start with the basics for a simple close to home day hike and expand our packing list to include items for an overnight. I’ll even throw in a few of my favorite non-essential luxury items. All participants will go home with a cook set that has all the equipment you need to cook a meal while out in the woods (food not included). At the end of class, you will have the opportunity to practice using your cook stove.

This Beer & Learn 5-part monthly outdoor skills series will teach you how to build a fire like a pro, the essential gear to have in your daypack, techniques for using trekking poles for more than just hiking and how to construct a tarp shelter. The series will conclude with a rare opportunity to campout overnight in Eagle Creek Park when we’ll learn the seven principles of Leave No Trace. All participants with go home with their very own beginner fire kit, cook set, tarp and trekking poles. Beer and snacks provided at each class.

All classes will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
