About Dan Wakefield Park

Established in 1928 and consisting of 2.69 acres, Dan Wakefield Park is located at the intersection of 61st Street and Broadway Street in Broad Ripple. This neighborhood park offers a shelter, a comfort station, playground equipment, a splash pad, volleyball, and tennis courts.  

The park, formerly known as Broadway & 61st street park was renamed after Indianapolis writer Dan Wakefield in 2016. Wakefield was born in Indianapolis on May 21, 1932 and attended Shortridge High School where he wrote for the school newspaper. His famous novels include Going All the Way and “Starting Over” both of which were later made into movies. Wakefield passed away at the age of 91 in 2024.
